Switch Troubleshooting: When It's Not the Optics

Common Switch-Side Issues
1. VLAN Misconfiguration
What's happening: The port is assigned to the wrong VLAN, or the VLAN it belongs to doesn't exist on the switch. The physical link may show as "up," but traffic has nowhere to go.
How to spot it: You can ping the device on the other end, but traffic doesn't flow. The port LED may blink, but no data passes through.
What to do: Log into the switch management interface, check the port's VLAN assignment, and move it to the correct VLAN. If the VLAN is missing entirely, create it first.
2. STP Blocking
What's happening: Spanning Tree Protocol is doing its job — preventing a network loop. The port is physically connected, but STP has put it in a "blocking" state to protect the network.
How to spot it: The port status shows "blocking," "listening," or "learning" instead of "forwarding." The link light may be amber instead of green.
What to do: If this is an end device (server, workstation), enable portfast (or edge port) mode so the port goes straight to forwarding. If it's an uplink, verify there's no accidental loop in your cabling.
3. Port Disabled
What's happening: The port is either manually shut down (administratively down) or automatically disabled by the switch due to an error condition like loop detection, BPDU guard, or a PoE fault.
How to spot it: The port shows as "disabled" or "errdisabled." The same module and cable work fine when plugged into another port.
What to do: First, check if it was manually disabled — if so, simply re-enable it. If it's in errdisable state, look at the switch logs to understand why (e.g., "loopback detected"), fix that issue, then recover the port.
4. Speed/Duplex Mismatch
What's happening: Auto-negotiation failed, or one side was manually configured while the other stayed on auto. The result is a mismatch — for example, one side running at 100Mbps full-duplex while the other runs at 100Mbps half-duplex.
How to spot it: The link comes up but performance is poor. Check the switch's error counters — high numbers of CRC, FCS, or alignment errors are a dead giveaway.
What to do: The safest fix is to set both ends to auto-negotiation. If you must use manual settings, make sure speed and duplex match exactly on both sides. Never mix auto with manual.
5. Firmware Bug
What's happening: The switch firmware has a known bug affecting certain modules, port types, or features. The issue is often intermittent and may disappear after a reboot.
How to spot it: The problem seems random — it affects different ports at different times. Rebooting the switch temporarily fixes it. The same hardware works fine on another switch with different firmware.
What to do: Check the manufacturer's release notes for known issues related to your symptoms. Update to a stable firmware version (avoid the very latest if it's untested). If the problem persists, contact vendor support with logs.
